The Great Exchange
Most of us were taught to see the gospel as a list: believe this, stop that, try harder. The Bible describes something much bigger, a trade.
"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (Second Corinthians 5:21).
Read that slowly. Jesus took what was ours: our sin, our guilt, our failure. We were given what was His: His righteousness, His standing with the Father. We did not earn it and we could not have earned it.
This matters because a lot of tired Christians are still trying to pay a debt that was settled at the cross. They pray as if they are begging at the door, when they have been invited in as sons and daughters.
When you understand the exchange, two things happen. You stop living under condemnation, because the verdict has already been carried by Someone else. And you start living with confidence, because your standing no longer depends on how well this week went.
That confidence does not make us careless. It makes us grateful, and gratitude is a far stronger reason to obey than fear.
If you have been trying to earn what God has already given, put it down today. Thank Him for the trade, and walk in it.
The Great Exchange is the heart of the true gospel, and we spend a whole class on it in Jesus Boot Camp. The course is free at jesusbootcamp.org/join.
